Ms. Altendorfer Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grade Class for students with Functional Academic Needs (FAN)

Welcome to the Kindergarten, 1st Grade & 2nd Grade FAN (Functional Academic Needs) Classroom. My name is Kathryn Altendorfer and I've been teaching special education for more than 10 years. I love it! The FAN (Functional Academic Needs) classroom focuses on students who benefit from more practice the the areas of reading, writing, and math to help them learn the same skills as the same age level friends. This is another exciting year for the students in FAN. We've planned many challenging and fun activities that will help our students meet their academic, personal and social goals.

Parents have the most important role in their child's learning. We know that these are some of the most important are:

- Eating a nutritious breakfast every morning.
- Getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night.

- Reading with your child every day; both books that they can read and books that parents enjoy reading.
You can help your students by:
    - Using the initial (first) and last  sound to read and find words.
    - Stop reading when you get to a common or high frequency word and have your child read those words.
    - Stop in the middle of an exciting part and predict what may happen on the next page.
    - Stop and talk about what has just happened; repeat the story, highlight the most exciting or fun part of
the book, retell the story in order of what you have just read, etc.

- Writing is another fun activity you can do with your children.
    - Write their first and last name everywhere (in shaving cream, in bubbles, in shampoo, in pudding, etc.)
    - Write lists for the grocery store.
    - Write letters to friends and relatives.
    - Draw illustrations of events or activities you have done as a family.

- Math activities and learning can also happen everywhere. Count in in the car. Find numbers on signs. Practice while on
  walks. Have fun everywhere.
    - Counting to 110 by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.
    - Counting to 22 by 2s.
    - Count odd and even numbers.
    - Counting backwards from 12.
    - Identifying coins by name and their value.
    - Solving simple addition and subtraction problems to 10.

- Practice tying shoes (please skip velcro).
- Practice reciting your home telephone number, address, and parents first and last names.

Enjoy all these fun activities. Together we can do impossible things.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss your student's progress.

Thank You!
